OHVers Attend Nor Cal Monument Meeting to Show Interest in Management Plan

Riders Highlight Important OHV Trails at
Monument Recreation Station

A good turnout of both motorized and non-motorized trail enthusiast attended the U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management’s public meeting last night in Winters, California.

The agencies said they are in the early stages (pre-scoping) of developing a management plan for the Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument (BSMNM) and have invited the public to participate in Community Conversations about the Monument. The conversations are an opportunity for the public to express what is important to them about the management of the BSMNM.

OHV recreationists and clubs who use the area for trail riding and events such as enduros and dual-sport rides know just how important it is for them to participate in the public process related with the upcoming management plan for the monument.

Recreationists Engage with BLM/FS Staff

The third Community Conversation will occur Tuesday, October 4 at the Holiday Inn Express in Willows, Calif. The meeting room is at 545 N. Humboldt Ave. and will also run from 5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

The BSMNM was established in July 2015 to preserve the objects of scientific and historic interest on the lands of the Berryessa Snow Mountain area. The 330,000-acre area is bounded on the north by the Snow Mountain Wilderness and on the south by Berryessa Mountain in north-central California. Approximately 197,000 acres are administered by US Forest Service and 133,000 acres by the BLM.

The agencies hope that you will join them at a Community Conversation. For more information please go here, http://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/mendocino/home/?cid=FSEPRD506559

SxS Trails and Training Serve Greater Sacramento Area and Delta Region

Located just 25 miles east of Sacramento California, Prairie City State Vehicular Recreation Area (SVRA) offers a lot of diverse recreational opportunity for the OHV enthusiast.   There are a number of trails for dirt-bikes, ATVs, SxSs, and 4x4 vehicles.

The unit also has several 4x4 obstacle courses for full-size vehicles, an environmental training center, kiddie tracks, and is home to the world-famous Hangtown MX.

QWR believes it offers the residents of the Greater Sacramento Area some great OHV recreation that is convenient, well-managed, and fun.

The park offers SxS training as well.  Last year, Prairie City SVRA, Hollister Hills SVRA, and a site in Irvine were designated as official training centers for the Basic DriverCourse created by the Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle Association (ROHVA).

After taking the free 2 hour online ROV E-Course, students 16 years of age or older which have a valid driver’s license are eligible to take the 3 hour closed-range driving program taught by a licensed ROHVA DriverCoach.  The cost for the Basic DriverCourse is $150 per driver and a passenger can attend for free.

At some locations, the DriverCourse offers additional Open Trail Experiences which allows the driver to put some of their new skills into practice on a variety of terrains.

If you live in the Greater Sacramento or Delta Region of California and don’t have time to take a family OHV vacation into the mountains and are looking for a place where you or your family members can ride or drive their motorized vehicle,  Prairie City SVRA is certainly an alternative that is worthy of consideration.  It is also a great place to get trained up on that new SxS you just purchased.

Backcountry OHV/Adventure Safety - SPOT Location Service

QWR believes that rider safety is an important tenet of responsible OHV recreation.  Within the last week, two of my OHV/adventure friends were saved by their SPOT GPS Satellite Messenger while riding in rugged areas of the California Coastal Mountain Range and the Sierra Nevada.

The SPOT Messenger was added to the QWR chest protector about 6 years ago.  The unit has 3 functions which includes a HELP function that can alert your friends and family that you are in a non-life threatening situation but are in need of assistance (i.e. broke down vehicle, etc.)

The OK check-in function is great for when you are in the backcountry without cell service and you want to send a message (with your GPS coordinates) to family members that the ride is going great.  QWR uses that feature a lot as it reassures your loved ones that you are OK.

The SOS function is for when you are in a life threatening situation and you need emergency medical care STAT.  When that function is activated, it sends your GPS coordinates to a world-wide emergency response center that will contact the appropriate services.

For about $170 dollars/yr. you get the SPOT tracking device and the emergency medical services.   QWR believes this product is the best "safety" insurance that money can buy if you ride in the backcountry.   This unit is being used by many members of my riding network in both the private and public sector.  Having this product on your chest protector or backpack is a must addition to your adventure gear.
